If it's good enough for Elvis, it's good enough for you, dammit.

Every week, Comics! The Blog goes through the list of new releases and we tell you which comics to plug into your mind hole. Your mileage may vary.

It’s an unexpectedly light week for comics. Which is to say, it’s the size of our old regular shipments from a few years ago. Seriously, the amount of comics - good comics – that are out on the stands right now is staggering, and even with a relatively light week, there’s a lot of good to be had. Let’s get to it.

HAWKEYE #7 (Marvel Comics)

God bless you  Matt Fraction.

During fake American Thanksgiving, beset by the idea and the urge to have the Hawkguy series reflect the events of Hurricane Sandy, Matt Fraction spent his holiday weekend feverishly plotting and scripting what would be this week’s issue: a touching look at how slightly regular superheroes deal with the events of the hurricane by helping out their friends. It’s really as simple as that.

This issue is divided into two interwoven stories, half drawn by the incomparable Steve Lieber, and the other by the stellar Jessie Hamm. While Clint heads off to help his friend Grills take care of his dad during the storm, Kate is off to a wedding and finds herself in a position where she needs to help a wedding goer survive the storm. Each of these stories is relatively quiet when compared to, say, the recent events of “The Tape”, but they are no less emotional and affecting. What’s more, Fraction has seen fit to donate every accountable cent he’s making from this issue to Hurricane relief efforts. Much to the same point, I’m donating a dollar of my own god damn money for every issue of Hawkguy #7 that I sell at the store today. So hey, even if you’re not interested in the book (and really, if you’re not interested in this book, we’re going to have a talk later), maybe go out and grab a copy anyway. At the very least, you’ll be doing a good thing.

DOCTOR WHO: PRISONERS OF TIME #1 (IDW Publishing)

As part of the big 50th anniversary celebration for the series, IDW and the BBC are releasing this monthly series that will feature each and every one of the Doctors in one long narrative. For the first 11 issues, each Doctor will get the spotlight, followed up by a somewhat mysterious capper issue that will feature… well, who knows. You’d have to be a damn Time Lord to know what everyone has in store. Anyway, if you’re feeling withdrawal symptoms while you wait for the second half of the series to begin, look no further than this new series! Grab the first issues before they run out of print. (Because it’s gonna happen.)

INVINCIBLE #100 (Image Comics)

100 issues.

While much of the world’s attention is fixed on Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead series, this stellar superhero book has been trundling along, telling some fantastic superhero stories that you would never find in the pages of Marvel or DC books. With a solid creative team at its core (Kirkman and Ryan Ottley… with co-creator Cory Walker on the odd occasion), this has quietly become one of the longest running independent books on the market, mixing superhero tropes with that of indie comics – the perpetual long form, never-ending story mashing up with… well, with palpable change and endings. It’s a strange mix, but one that ends up being quite fascinating. If you haven’t given this series a try, you might want to wait until the next issue to start things up (this issue ends a pretty big story arc), but seriously, you should check this series out sooner rather than later.

HIGH CRIMES #1 (Monkeybrain Comics)

Have you ever wondered what life would be like as a grave robber? I have one customer who confessed to accidentally becoming a grave robber in his youth. He stated it quiet casually one day, as though he was telling me about some kind of every day occurence. Like you know, when you’re hard up for cash and it’s the 60s and maybe some guy offers you a mysterious job and soon you’re digging up graves a couple of times a month or something? Yeah. That happens to everyone.

Anyway, that was a thing that I was told once. I’m not sure if it’s true (this customer has a few stories about his life I’m not sure I readily believe) but whatever. The point is, this book is about grave robbers. And not just your run of the mill accidental grave robbers – they’re stealing shit off of bodies on Mt. Everest. Because you can not be poor and try to scale that mountain. You just can’t. Anyway, things get dicey (as these things do) and the result is a pretty riveting first issue of a crime series. It’s written by Christopher Sebela (who you will recognize as Kelly Sue DeConnick’s sometimes co-writer on Captain Marvel, and from the amazing creator owned series Screamland) with art from Ibrahim Moustafa, who… I’ll admit, is a new name to me, but holy damn can he draw. Seriously, head over to Comixology and buy the first issue. It’ll run you a scant 99 cents, and you’ll be neck-deep in some sweet high altitude noir.

TALES DESIGNED TO THRIZZLE VOL 2 (Fantagraphics)

The second half of Michael Kupperman’s twisted comedy series is finally released! Marvel at the two-fisted adventures of Edison and Twain as they head out into space in a shuttle that has a haunted house for a basement! Marvel, as other crazy shit happens! I am really, really late with this feature, and can’t be bothered to look through my issue and tell you other things that happened and really… even if I did, they would just ruin the jokes when you started to read. Just go out, and give the book a once over. Chances are, you’ll land on a page with something insane that will make you laugh (like the idea of sex blimps) and you’ll go from there. Buy!

These are some of the many great books being released this week! You can find the full list of comics being released here. If you have any other recommendations, let us know in the comments below.
